Pope Francis' health condition / Vatican provides new details

The Vatican has provided new details on the condition of Pope Francis.

Pope Francis, who is battling pneumonia and "mild" kidney failure, had a good night's sleep and is resting, the Vatican said in a brief statement Monday morning. Vatican sources later said the pope was awake and continuing therapy, eating normally and in good spirits.

Pope Francis had a quiet tenth night in hospital, according to a statement released Monday morning by the Holy See Press Office.

The Pope is receiving treatment for double pneumonia at Rome's Gemelli hospital.

On Sunday evening, the Holy See Press Office said his condition remains critical, although he has not experienced any respiratory distress since Saturday morning.

Pope Francis had received a blood transfusion to increase his hemoglobin level.

"Thrombocytopenia remains stable; however, some blood tests indicate early, mild renal failure, which is currently under control," the Sunday press release said, adding that "high-flow oxygen therapy continues via nasal cannulae."

Earlier on Sunday, the Pope attended Mass in his residence at the Gemelli hospital with the doctors and nurses who are overseeing his treatment. /CNA
