Floods in Italy/ The provinces of Florence and Bologna are at risk

Florence is facing a red weather warning this Friday after torrential rain caused several rivers in the Italian regions of Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna to burst their banks. The red alert was also extended to the provinces of Prato, Pistoia and Pisa.

Schools and parks have been closed in Florence and Tuscany as a precaution, after the Arno River reached alert levels in the Tuscan capital.

The Mugello area north of Florence has been badly affected, with the Rimaggio river bursting its banks and leading to severe flooding in Sesto Fiorentino.

"The entire regional system of civil protection, rescue and health emergencies of Tuscany is on maximum alert," said the head of the region, Eugenio Giani.

A red alert also went into effect on Friday in Bologna and other parts of the Emilia-Romagna region, northeast of Tuscany, with several rivers exceeding the alert level.

Schools were closed on Friday in Bologna, where ground floor apartments and basements were evacuated in certain areas of the city.

People in flood-affected regions have been advised to follow official updates from local authorities and exercise extreme caution./CNA
