An expert has warned that Russia could use "terrible" chemical weapons in Ukraine, urging the international community to condemn it.

On Sunday, Russia was accused of using phosphorus in the besieged city of Bakhmut.

Phosphorus bombardment of civilian areas is illegal under the Geneva Conventions, a landmark treaty governing the rules of war. However, it can be used legitimately by military forces for night illumination.

Phosphorus creates fires that are extremely difficult to extinguish. If people are hit with it, they suffer terrible burns, which are actually accelerated if they come into contact with water.

On the other hand, the Kremlin says that it has no intention of using chemical weapons.

Despite being an "absolutely terrifying weapon", Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a British chemical weapons expert, says that from a military perspective it could be "incredibly successful" on the battlefield.

"It was a favorite weapon of the Syrian regime," he explained. "It was used to burn down entire towns and villages in the northwest 'as a kind of medieval scorched earth policy.'

The white phosphorus bombs were allegedly used by Syrian government forces working alongside Russian General Sergei Surovikin as part of Moscow's 2015 military intervention to rescue the country's embattled leader Bashar al-Assad from rebels./ CNA .co.uk
