A large number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain's maritime rescue service announced on Monday, the latest attack in what has become a trend over the past four years.

The Alboran Cognac boat, which was 15 meters long and was carrying two people, encountered the predators at 9:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, authorities said, CNN reports . 

Passengers reported feeling sudden shocks before water began to enter the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby ship took them on board and transported them to Gibraltar.

The incident is the latest example of repeated orca collisions around the Strait of Gibraltar that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Researchers are unsure of the causes of the behavior, with leading theories including it a playful display of mammalian curiosity, a social fashion, or the deliberate targeting of what they perceive as competition for their preferred prey. 

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They are eight meters long and weigh up to six tons./CNA
