Mohamed Amra, the prisoner who escaped from a prison van in France, is said to have links to a gang in the southern city of Marseille.
Known as "The Fly", Amra was being taken from court to a prison in the city of Rouen near Paris on Tuesday when a car rammed the prison van into a cab and gunmen opened fire. Two police officers were killed.
Prosecutors say the 30-year-old was convicted of theft on May 10 and was also charged by prosecutors in Marseille for a kidnapping that led to his death.
He was being held in Val de Reuil prison, near Rouen, and was said to have appeared in a nearby court on the new charges.
His lawyer, Hugues Vigier, said Amra had already made an escape attempt at the weekend by sawing through the bars of his cell, but said he was shocked by the "unforgivable and insane" violence.
Amra's mother stated that he had given her no indication that he would try to escape.
Mohamed Amra has 13 previous convictions for mostly minor offences.
However his involvement in the death of a man from Dreux near Rouen, who was kidnapped in Marseilles in acts related to drug trafficking, suggests involvement with criminals. /CNA
