Russia continues attacks in Kharkiv

Four people have been wounded in fresh Russian attacks in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv, Ukrainian officials said on May 14.

A man and three women were wounded by shelling by Russian forces in the early hours of Tuesday, said Oleh Sinehubov, governor of Kharkiv region, which includes the city of the same name.

Sinhubov wrote on Telegram that Russia attacked Ukraine's second largest city with new UMPB D-30 bombs, which are high-precision bombs and act like cruise missiles.

The use of these types of bombs could not be independently confirmed, while Moscow has not yet commented on these Ukrainian claims.

Both Ukraine and Russia say they do not attack civilians in the February 2022 offensive Moscow launched against Kiev.

The war has killed thousands, displaced millions and turned Ukrainian cities into ruins.

In recent days, Russia has been pushing forward a ground offensive of its own in the Kharkiv region, which is located near the border with Russia. Moscow is attacking new areas with small groups of soldiers, expanding the front, Ukrainian officials have said.

The new Russian attacks in Kharkiv are taking place on the day that the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, is in Ukraine on an unannounced visit, during which he will meet with Ukrainian heads of state.

The purpose of the visit, according to American officials, is to reaffirm Washington's support for Kiev, whose forces have been facing Russian occupation for more than two years./ REL
