On Monday, the trial of Senator Bob Menendez, former chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, who is accused of using his position for personal gain, begins. As the correspondent of the Voice of America, Aron Ranen, reports, Mr. Menendez faces federal charges and tomorrow in New York the process begins with the selection of the jury.
US Senator Bob Menendez could face several years in prison if convicted on corruption charges under suspicion of acting as an unregistered agent of the Egyptian government.
Mr. Menendez disputes the charges and says he is innocent and has rejected calls to resign from the Senate. Legal experts say the charges are historic.
"The charges are unique, it is the first time in American history that a sitting senator is accused of being an agent of a foreign government," says Neama Rahmani, former federal prosecutor.
The senator, who served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, is accused of taking cash, gold bullion and a Mercedes-Benz after using his influence to help several businessmen in New Jersey as well as the Egyptian government.
The Justice Department says Mr. Menendez and his wife accepted "hundreds of thousands of dollars" in exchange for help. In June 2022, federal agents raided the couple's New Jersey home and discovered nearly half a million dollars in cash and more than $100,000 worth of gold bullion.
"Senator Menendez will defend himself by saying he was acting in the public interest. But this way of defense is unlikely to work in this case", says Neama Rahmani, former federal prosecutor.
Reactions from voters in his New Jersey constituency are mixed.
"I think he should be tried for what he did. And if he is found guilty, he should leave the Senate," says a resident.
"It's a bit disappointing when you hear the allegations. We hope they are not true. But we have a good judicial system, let's let him find out what the facts are", says another resident.
Mr. Menendez has temporarily resigned as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to focus on his defense. He was once seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party, but Mr. Menendez's future is now uncertain.
"Inevitably, this will hurt Bob Menendez's career. Of course, in politics, never say never, but it doesn't seem like there will be a good prospect for it," says Ashley Koning, from Rutgers University.
In a statement issued in September of last year, Mr. Menendez said that his political rivals were behind the allegations.
"Elements behind the scenes have constantly tried to silence me and bury me as a politician. I am confident that this case will be successfully resolved once all the facts are presented and the people of New Jersey will learn the truth," the statement said.
Jury selection for the senator's trial begins on Monday and is expected to last for several weeks./ VOA
