Kim Jong Un oversees the testing of a new missile launcher

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen another test of a multiple rocket launcher his country aims to put into service starting this year, state media reported Saturday.

North Korea's Korean Central News Agency, KCNA, said Friday's test confirmed the "advantages and destructive power" of the multiple rocket launcher and its projectiles.

The KNCA said the system, which the North has tested twice this year, will be put into use by combat units from 2024 to 2026 to replace aging missile launchers.

In recent months, North Korea has kept up an accelerated pace of weapons testing as it aims to boost its military capabilities at a time of diplomatic spats with the United States and South Korea.

Experts say Kim's aim is to pressure the US to finally accept the idea that North Korea is a nuclear power and to sit down and talk with it about economic and security concessions.

Recently, North Korea has focused on testing artillery systems. But this year, it has also tested various cruise missiles, as well as a new medium-range hypersonic missile with solid-fuel propellants.

Experts say this missile is designed to hit distant US targets in the Pacific, including its military base in Guam.

After Friday's test, Kim ordered an increase in production of the 240-mm multiple rocket launchers and their shells, which he said would bring "big change" to the combat capabilities of his forces, KCNA reported.

While North Korea's artillery systems are built to hit targets in the South Korean capital, South Korean military officials suspect that the North's latest tests are aimed at evaluating the weapons that the country has in mind. export them to Russia.
