Workers in Germany worked around 1.3 billion hours of overtime in 2023, according to data published by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB).
According to them, more than half of this time - 775 million hours - went unpaid.
Germany's labor ministry said that, on average, each worker worked 31.6 hours of overtime in 2023, of which 18.4 remained unpaid.
The comments came in response to a parliamentary question from Susanne Ferschl - a lawmaker from the left-wing Die Linke party.
"Employers save billions in wages by not paying overtime, while employees suffer from extended working hours and constant demands for flexibility," Ferschl said, DPA reports.
According to the data, total overtime work last year corresponds to 835,000 full-time jobs.
Total overtime hours in 2023 fell by about 100 million hours from the previous year, when workers logged a total of 1.4 billion overtime hours./ REL
