Russian President Vladimir Putin accused the West on Thursday of raising the risks of a global conflict, saying "no one will be allowed to threaten the world's largest nuclear power".
Putin, speaking during celebrations marking the anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two and as Russian troops advance against Western-backed forces in Ukraine, accused Western elites of being "arrogant".
The Russian president stressed that the West is forgetting the decisive role played by the Soviet Union in the defeat of Nazi Germany and "are fomenting conflicts around the world".
"We know where the exaggeration of such ambitions leads. Russia will do everything to prevent a global conflict," Putin said in Moscow's Red Square.
"At the same time, we will not allow anyone to threaten us. Our strategic forces are always in a state of combat readiness," he emphasized.
Regarding nuclear weapons, the Russian president stated that there is nothing unusual in a planned exercise that includes their practical deployment.
"There is nothing unusual here, this is planned work," Putin said in comments the Kremlin said were made on May 7, according to Russian news agencies.
Russia announced on Monday that it will conduct a drill with the deployment of tactical nuclear weapons following threats that Moscow says are coming from France, Britain and the United States./ CNA
