Legendary Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli has passed away at the age of 83.

According to what is reported by foreign media, Cavalli died after a long battle with the bad disease.

Italian news agency ANSA reported that the designer died at his home in Florence, the city where he was born.

Who was Roberto Cavalli?

Roberto Cavalli was born in Florence, Italy. His grandfather, Giuseppe Rossi, was an artist and member of the Macchiaioli Movement, whose work is exhibited in the Uffizi Gallery. Cavalli enrolled at the local Art Institute, concentrating on textile printing. While still a student, he made a series of floral knit prints that attracted the attention of major Italian hosiery factories.

In the early 1970s, he invented and patented a printing procedure on leather and began to create with different materials. He debuted these techniques in Paris, immediately receiving commissions from Hermès and Pierre Cardin. At the age of 32, he presented his first collection in Paris. He brought it to the catwalks of the Sala Bianca of the Palazzo Pitti in Florence, and later to those of the Milano Collezioni, jeans made with prints, intarsia leather, brocade and wild prints. He then opened his first boutique in 1972 in Saint-Tropez.

In 1980, Roberto Cavalli married Eva Düringer, a former Miss Austria and first runner-up at the 1977 Miss Universe pageant.

Roberto Cavalli was on the jury at the Miss Universe 1977 pageant, where his wife Eva Demar was a contestant, who represented Austria and won second place.

In July 2011, his collection was presented at The Brandery fashion show in Barcelona./ CNA
