Thousands of Iranians have taken to the square to bid farewell to President Ebrahim Raisi, who died in a helicopter accident. 

The first funeral ceremony is taking place in Tabriz in the northwest of the country, the region where Sunday's crash happened.

Thousands of people have taken to the streets in Tabriz to mourn President Raisi.

Meanwhile, Raisi's body is expected to be buried on Thursday in his hometown, Mashhad. 

Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has declared five days of mourning following the president's loss.

Raisi died in a helicopter crash in a mountainous area of ??northwest Iran, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Ayatollah Khamenei said he offered his condolences to the people of Iran. Raisi, 63, had been tipped as a possible successor to the supreme leader.

State media said elections would be held on June 28 to elect a new president.
