Iran announces five days of mourning for the president

The President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi

Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared five days of mourning following the death of the country's president, Ebrahim Raisi.

Raisi was killed in a helicopter crash in a mountainous area of ??northwestern Iran, along with Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Ayatollah Khamenei said he offered his condolences to the people of Iran. Raisi, 63, had been tipped as a possible successor to the supreme leader.

State media said elections would be held on June 28 to elect a new president.

Meanwhile, Vice President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed to take over the interim duties.

Iran's cabinet has also appointed Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as acting foreign minister./ CNA
