Russia claims to have taken control of a settlement in Luhansk

Russia said its forces had taken control of the Ukrainian village of Bilogorvka, one of the few settlements in the eastern Luhansk region under Kiev's control.

Luhansk is one of four Ukrainian regions that Moscow claims to have annexed in 2022, and taking full control of them is a top priority for the Kremlin.

"As a result of active combat operations, the units of the southern group of the army completely liberated the settlement of Bilogorivika," claimed the Ministry of Defense of Russia.

Bilogorivka, which had a population of around 800 before the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, was a symbol of Ukrainian resistance in the Luhansk region. This settlement was recaptured by Kiev forces in 2022.

The Ukrainian army in the last two weeks is facing great pressure, as Russia is carrying out the new offensive in the Kharkiv region. Kiev's troops are also facing a shortage of ammunition.
