Great Britain has decided to release prisoners who have served 40 percent of their sentences. This measure is taken as a way to reduce overcrowding in prisons.

Prisoners in England and Wales, except for those on the most serious charges, are usually released after serving 50 percent of their sentences and the new ruling will come into effect in September, Sky News reports.

The president of the Association of Prison Officers, Mark Fairhurst, said that with the new decision, about 5,500 prisoners will be released from prison in the first months.

The new decision does not apply to those who have committed crimes with a sentence of four years or more, as well as to criminals who have committed serious crimes. They must currently serve two-thirds of their sentence in prison or the Parole Board must make a decision on whether they can be released.

Prisoners who will be released early in accordance with the new decision will be strictly monitored./CNA
