Germany is a country of immigration. As the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced, almost one in five citizens immigrated to Germany from abroad.
According to calculations based on the statistics of the last population census in Germany, out of about 82.7 million inhabitants that the country has, 67.1 million were born here, while 15.6 million came from abroad. 40 percent of these immigrants received German citizenship.
The countries from which the largest number of foreigners living in Germany came are Poland (12 percent), Turkey (9 percent) and Russia (7 percent). Syria and Ukraine each account for 5 percent of foreigners.
Significant increase in the number of Ukrainians
However, the number of Ukrainians who have come to Germany to escape the war has continued to rise significantly since the end of the last census in May 2022.
The registration is based on a complex data assessment and a citizen survey, which is organized approximately every ten years. The published results are also available online on the website of the Federal Statistics Office./ DW
