New immigration measures/ MEPs vote in favor of "return centers"

The European Parliament today approved a law aimed at speeding up the deportation of illegal immigrants to "return centers" outside the European Union, as pressure grows to tighten immigration rules.

MEPs in Brussels voted 389 to 206 in favour of reforms that pave the way for the creation of migrant centres across the bloc's borders to house migrants whose asylum claims are rejected. Under the proposals, those who refuse to be relocated to return centres would face harsh penalties.

The law enables EU countries to return irregular migrants to third countries unrelated to their origin, as long as they have bilateral agreements with a non-EU state to build so-called "return centres" on its territory.

Both MEPs and EU countries want to include families with children in deportations to third countries, excluding only unaccompanied minors. The next step will be negotiations between lawmakers and member states on a final legislative text.

Meanwhile, similar schemes have already faced legal problems. The United Kingdom's plan to deport undocumented migrants to Rwanda was ultimately scrapped after numerous hurdles in the courts. Italy's plan to deport migrants to Albania has failed due to its own legal challenges. /CNA
