Wave of resignations in the Meloni government/ A minister resigns

Italy's Tourism Minister Daniela Santanche has submitted her resignation to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Her departure comes after Meloni herself asked her to leave the day before, as did two senior officials at the Ministry of Justice.

Santanche initially rejected the request, maintaining her stance, while the opposition had meanwhile presented a no-confidence motion to parliament that was scheduled to be discussed.

"Dear Giorgia, I present to you, as you officially requested, my resignation from the role of minister that you entrusted to me and which I believe I have fulfilled as best I could and without any obstacles. I was and am keen to emphasize that to date my criminal record is clean and that there has not been even a simple lawsuit regarding the job cuts fund issue.

"I wanted my resignation to be separate from the very different issue involving the venerable Delmastro, who is also paying a high price. Having clarified this, I have no difficulty in saying 'I obey' and doing what you ask of me. I will not hide a little bitterness about the outcome of my ministerial journey, but in my life I have become accustomed to paying my own bills and often those of others. I am more interested in our friendship and the future of our movement ," Santanche's letter to Meloni states.

Santanche is being investigated in two criminal cases by the Milan Prosecutor's Office. One of them concerns the company Visibilia, founded and managed by her until 2021, for which the Prosecutor's Office has put her under investigation for charges of false accounting.

Recall that the day before, the deputy minister of justice, Andrea Delmastro, and the chief of staff of this ministry, Giusi Bartolozzi, resigned. Delmastro resigned after it was discovered that he had shares in a restaurant linked to the mafia, while Bartolozzi resigned after making controversial comments during the election campaign.

The departures come after Meloni suffered a crushing defeat in a referendum on a proposed reform of the country's judicial system. Both Meloni and Justice Minister Carlo Nordio have rejected calls for them to resign, having failed to convince Italians of the need to revamp the country's fiercely independent judiciary.  /CNA
