Historic trial on social media addiction/ Meta and Google found guilty

A jury in Los Angeles has handed an unprecedented victory to a girl who sued Meta and Google over her childhood addiction to social media.

A panel of lawyers said that Meta and Google intentionally built addictive social media platforms that damaged the 20-year-old's mental health.

The outcome of the historic decision is likely to affect hundreds of similar cases now being heard in American courts.

Meta's lawyers argued that, while Kaley had suffered in her life, her use of Instagram - which Meta owns along with Facebook and WhatsApp - did not cause or significantly contribute to those difficulties.

After a trial that lasted about five weeks, the jury found Meta 70% liable for the plaintiff's damages - and YouTube 30% at fault.

In a statement, Meta said: “We respectfully disagree with the decision and are evaluating our legal options.”

During his first appearance before a jury in February, Meta Chairman and CEO Mark Zuckerberg relied on his company's long-standing policy of not allowing users under the age of 13 on any of its platforms.

When presented with internal research and documents showing that Meta knew that young children were in fact using its platforms, Zuckerberg said he always wanted faster progress in identifying users under 13.

While Google, as the owner of YouTube, was also a defendant in the case, the bulk of the legal proceedings focused on Instagram and Meta.

Snap and TikTok were also initially defendants, but both companies reached undisclosed settlements with the 20-year-old before trial. /CNA
