Kim Jong Un: War with Iran justifies decision to keep nuclear weapons

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the clashes between the US and Iran show that his country's decision to maintain its nuclear arsenal was right.

In a speech before the Supreme People's Assembly, Kim accused Washington of state-sponsored acts of terrorism and aggression, adding that the current situation clearly proves that North Korea should not give up its nuclear weapons.

He stressed that the country's nuclear status is now "irreversible," reinforcing Pyongyang's stance against any efforts at denuclearization.

His comments come as US President Donald Trump has signaled a willingness to resume talks with North Korea. However, Kim has hinted that any future dialogue will only be possible if the US recognises his country as a nuclear power and abandons what he calls "hostile policies".

Meanwhile, recent developments include new weapons tests by North Korea, including missile launches believed to be capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

Analysts estimate that tensions in the Middle East and relations with Iran are directly affecting Pyongyang's security strategy, making it more difficult to resume negotiations on the nuclear issue./ CNA
