European Commission postpones proposal to permanently ban Russian oil

The European Commission has postponed the presentation of a long-awaited proposal to permanently ban Russian oil imports, as the war in the Middle East continues to send shockwaves through energy markets and keep Brent above $100 a barrel.

This also comes amid a tense standoff with Hungary and Slovakia, the only member states still buying Russian oil, over the Soviet-era Druzhba pipeline.

The legislation, which is part of the REPowerEU plan, was originally scheduled to be unveiled on April 15, but the date has now been removed from the calendar.

The delay has been influenced by US-Israeli attacks on Iran, which have shaken energy markets and closed the Strait of Hormuz, a vital passage that, until now, transported a fifth of global oil and LNG every day.

The EU had previously banned Russian oil under its traditional sanctions regime, which must be renewed every six months by unanimity. Hungary and Slovakia enjoy an unlimited exemption from these sanctions, allowing them to continue buying. /CNA
