Minerals agreement/Kiev ready to sign with US

Kiev is reportedly ready to sign the minerals agreement with the US.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said that Ukraine and the United States could sign an agreement on strategic minerals within the next 24 hours. Speaking on a television show, Shmyhal said that the updated agreement has now evolved into a true partnership agreement, leaving open the possibility that future American aid could be included in the framework of contributions to the relevant fund.

US President Donald Trump had demanded the signing of this agreement in exchange for the economic and military support that the US has provided to Ukraine in recent years, since the Russian invasion of 2022.

Kiev's initial reluctance to sign such an agreement even provoked the reaction of the US administration and the temporary suspension of aid to Ukraine.

Trump, for his part, had argued that this agreement could also function as an indirect security guarantee, as the US would have economic interests within Ukraine's borders, which it would have to protect.

However, for the moment, it is unclear whether and how exactly such an agreement could contribute to the future, as the Russian side is not withdrawing any of its demands./CNA
