China criticizes Macron for comparing Ukraine to Taiwan
China has hit back at French President Emmanuel Macron over the French leader's comparison between the conflict in Ukraine and the fate of Taiwan, saying the two issues are "different in nature and not at all comparable."

"Comparing the Taiwan issue with the Ukraine issue is unacceptable," said a statement from the Chinese Embassy in Singapore, published on social media on May 31, a day after Macron warned defense officials in Asia not to view the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a distant problem.

"If we think that Russia could be allowed to take part of the territory of Ukraine without any restrictions, without any reaction from the world order, how would you describe what could happen in Taiwan," Macron said during the Shangri-La Dialogue, the annual security forum in Asia.

"What would you do the day something happens in the Philippines?"

The Chinese embassy responded by stating that "the Taiwan issue is entirely China's internal affair. There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory."

While Taiwan considers itself a sovereign state, China has said it does not rule out the possibility of using force to bring the island under its control.

During the forum in Singapore, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned that China is "preparing" to use military force to change the balance of power in Asia, adding that the Chinese military is building capabilities to invade Taiwan "and is training for a real scenario."/ REL
