Israel is investigating whether it killed the head of Hamas in Gaza

The Israeli military said it is investigating whether Yahya Sinwar, the top leader of Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - was killed during a military operation in Gaza.

In a statement, the army said on October 17 that three militants were killed during operations in Gaza, without giving further details. The military said the identities of the three killed have not yet been confirmed, but "we are looking at the possibility" that one of them is Sinwari.

Sinwari was one of the main architects of the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which triggered the war in Gaza.

He was elected leader of the group after the killing of Ismael Haniyeh in July, in a suspected Israeli attack in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

During the October 7 attack, Hamas killed nearly 1,200 people – mostly civilians – in southern Israel and kidnapped nearly 250 others. As a result of the Israeli offensive, more than 42,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza./ REL
