Iceland evacuates an entire town due to volcano

Authorities in Iceland have evacuated 3,400 residents from a town in the southwest of the island, due to fear of a volcanic eruption, AP reports.

"At this stage, it is not possible to determine exactly if and where the magma may reach the surface," the Met Office said.

Volcanic eruptions pose a serious danger to aviation because they can throw highly corrosive ash high into the atmosphere, where it can cause aircraft engines to fail, damage flight control systems, and reduce visibility.

A major eruption in Iceland in 2010 caused widespread disruption of air travel between Europe and North America, costing airlines an estimated $3 billion after canceling more than 100,000 flights.

The evacuation comes after the region was rocked by hundreds of small earthquakes every day for more than two weeks as scientists monitor a pool of magma about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) underground./ CNA
