Peace and Hamas "do not go together," said Mark Regev, Israel's former ambassador to the United Kingdom.

"It is impossible to have peace with Hamas and they have said this publicly," Regev told the BBC's Neeshour program on Monday evening.

He was referring to a comment earlier this month by Taher El-Nounou, a media adviser to Hamas, who said the war with Israel would become permanent on all borders.

"This is why the Israeli public is 100% united in saying that we refuse to live any longer near this terrorist enclave on our southern border. And we must talk about a future without Hamas," Regev said.

Asked whether Israel would support reconstruction in the Gaza Strip, which has been largely destroyed by Israel's retaliatory bombing, Regev said his country's budget is focused on rebuilding communities in southern Israel.

He added that he expects many international partners to be willing to fund Gaza's reconstruction efforts.

"It should not be Israeli money. This is not a war that we started or that we wanted, as you know. Hamas bears responsibility for the outbreak of hostilities," he said./ CNA
