Attack on Ras Laffan threatens global supply, higher gas prices expected

Attack on Ras Laffan could lead to supply shortages and rising gas prices

Aljazeera spoke to Rachel Ziemba, senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security think tank, about the Iranian attack on Ras Laffan Industrial City in Qatar.

Ziemba said that, while the extent of the attack on the country's main gas facility remains unknown, the reconstruction or resumption of operations is likely to keep natural gas prices "higher for a longer period."

She stressed that the attack "shows that there may be supply shortages even after a ceasefire or end to violence."

Ziemba also added that, because production was disrupted in the early days of the war after an attack, a new global supply shock is not expected in the short term, but this situation could “further increase pressure on regional energy supplies, which could affect power and desalination capacity.”
