The Slovak Prime Minister, Robert Fico, was attacked with a gun yesterday afternoon.

Fico was shot in the city of Handlova, in front of the house of culture, immediately after the government meeting.

Local media reports that 71-year-old Juraj Cintula shot the Slovak Prime Minister 5 times in the stomach and left hand.

The latter immediately underwent a surgical intervention at the Banska Bystrica hospital.

Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba told the BBC that Robert Fico was no longer in danger and that the operation had gone "well".

"Fico is not in a life-threatening situation at the moment. As far as I know, the operation went well and I think that in the end he will survive", he said.

The deputy prime minister blamed the opposition parties in Slovakia for inciting political hatred.

"Our prime minister has mentioned several times in the past that he was afraid this would happen," Taraba said, noting that Fico had warned that the way "the government was attacked with false accusations could incite a backlash from the people and lead to in something like that"./ CNA
