The Netherlands gives Ukraine permission to use F16s on Russian territory

The Netherlands has given permission to Ukraine to use the F-16 fighter jets on Russian territory, which it donated some time ago.

The news was announced by the commander of the Armed Forces of the Netherlands, Onno Eichelsheim.

"We have not imposed any restrictions on the use and range of the F16s, if the laws of war apply," Eichelsheim told public broadcaster NOS.

Speaking from the United States, General Eichelsheim said that his American colleagues "partially" agreed with his position.

The Netherlands has donated 24 F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine. Eichelsheim did not want to say whether Ukraine is now using any of them.

The F16s, built by Lochheed Martin, have been a favorite of Ukraine's fighters because of their destructive power. This aircraft can carry bombs, shells and missiles.

Ukrainian pilots have been trained on how to use the F16s by Western partners for months.

The Ukrainian military has been forced to depend on a small fleet of Soviet-era fighter jets to repel the Russian invasion, which began in 2022.
