Israeli army rescues another person taken hostage by Hamas

The Israeli military said it has rescued another person who was taken hostage by Hamas - the Palestinian group designated a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union - during the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that sparked the war in Gaza.

The rescue of the hostage brought joy among Israelis, after months of fighting, as dozens of people are still being held hostage despite international efforts to reach a ceasefire agreement and release the hostages.

The military said Qaid Farhan Alkadi was rescued from a tunnel "in a complex operation south of the Gaza Strip," without providing further details.

It is not known if anyone was killed or injured during the hostage rescue operation.

Qaid Farhan Alkadi, 52, was one of eight members of Israel's Bedouin Arab minority who were kidnapped on October 7. He was working as a security guard at a factory in Magen, one of several communities attacked by Hamas radicals. He has two wives and is the father of 11 children.

Israel's Defense Minister, Yoav Gallant, said the rescue operation was part of the "courageous activities the army is carrying out inside the Gaza Strip", adding that Israel "is committed to exploiting any situation to return the hostages". .

Hamas kidnapped nearly 250 people on October 7 and killed nearly 1,200 others, mostly civilians.

As a result of Israel's military offensive, more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza and 90 percent of Gaza's population of 2.3 million have been displaced.

Israel believes 108 hostages are still inside Gaza and more than 40 of them are dead. Many hostages were released during a week-long ceasefire in November in exchange for the release of Palestinians held by Israel.
