Other explosions have been reported in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan and Qatar, while Iran has warned of retaliation for any attacks by the US and Israel. Iranian state media reports dozens of deaths in the country after the US-Israeli attacks, including 53 people killed at a girls' school and 15 others at a sports gym in Fars province.

One person has died after falling debris in Abu Dhabi, while sirens are sounding across Israel and citizens are being warned to seek shelter.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has told the UN Security Council and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that Iran considers all US and Israeli bases and assets in the region as "legitimate military targets" and that it will continue to exercise the right of self-defense with determination.

US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have launched coordinated strikes that they have described as a “preemptive strike.” Trump confirmed a “major combat operation,” stressing that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons and that terrorist acts will no longer be tolerated.

Witnesses report plumes of smoke over the Iranian capital, while Iran and Israel have closed airspace. Airlines have canceled about 24% of flights to the Middle East, including half of flights to Qatar and Israel and 28% to Kuwait, according to preliminary data from Cirium.

The situation remains tense as the region faces a high risk of conflict escalation./ CNA
