The wedding has turned into a tragedy in Iraq. Over 100 people have lost their lives and 150 others have been injured after a fire broke out during a wedding ceremony.

According to the BBC, among the victims were the newly married couple. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but it reportedly broke out after fireworks were lit.

Burns and asphyxiation, or lack of oxygen, led to the deaths of more than 100 people in the wedding hall, says Iraqi health ministry spokesman Saif Al-Badr.

Al-Badr says the fire also caused crowd suppression.

Rescue teams are still searching through the burning ruins in the northern province of Nineveh, and local authorities have so far counted 113 people dead./ CNA
