US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday that it was up to Hamas to agree to a ceasefire that would allow more humanitarian aid to enter Gaza and pave the way for talks on a "solution sustainable" conflict.
Israel and Hamas blame each other for disagreement over a deal that would require the militant group to release some of the hostages it still holds in exchange for a 40-day ceasefire. Palestinian prisoners in Israel would also be released.
Before meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Secretary Blinken was still urging the parties to reach a ceasefire.
"The issue is Hamas. The issue is whether or not Hamas will decide to have a ceasefire for the benefit of all," Mr. Blinken declared.
"The ball is in their court. We are working hard and we will see what they will do."
Health authorities in Gaza say more than 30,000 Palestinians have been killed since Israel began the military campaign in response to an Oct. 7 attack by Hamas in southern Israel, during which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and 253 abducted. / Voa
