"Around 50,000 people living in the Serb-majority areas of the north use license plates issued by the Serbian authorities and refuse to recognize Kosovo institutions.
The Kosovo government's decision to introduce new rules, including replacing Serbian license plates with Kosovo ones, led to the clash"
This is what the prestigious British BBC writes, in a news story dedicated to the situation in the North of Kosovo.
Kosovo's government has postponed the implementation of new rules that would force people in areas with an ethnic Serb majority to exchange their Serbian-issued car plates with Kosovo ones.
American Ambassador Jeffrey Hovenier said that he asked the government of Kosovo to postpone the implementation of the license plate decision for 30 days "because it seems that there was misinformation and misunderstanding about the decision".
Kosovo then agreed to postpone the new rules for 30 days.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell welcomed the announcement in a tweet and said he expects all obstacles to be lifted immediately.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic also said he expected tensions to "de-escalate" after the rules were pushed back.
Similar protests took place last year over proposals to change license plate rules.
Tensions between Kosovo and Serbia continue despite both sides pledging to engage in EU-sponsored dialogue in an effort to resolve long-standing issues.
