Russian authorities review Telegram blocking

Russian authorities have set a deadline for a potential block on the messaging app Telegram, which could come into effect in early April.

Telegram is a popular tool in Russia for public and private communications, but authorities have accused it of allowing the platform to be used for illegal and extremist content.

The company denies the allegations, claiming that Moscow is trying to restrict its operations in order to push users towards a new state-owned app called "MAX."

According to Russian state media RBC, until April Telegram will remain available only on the front lines of the war in Ukraine.

Military sources, war correspondents and politicians have reported that Russian forces rely heavily on the app, both to communicate with their families and for operational purposes. /CNA
