US-registered motorboat entered its waters/ Cuba responds with fire, 4

A Florida-registered speedboat entered Cuban territorial waters and opened fire, prompting the Cuban coast guard to return fire.

According to Cuba's Interior Ministry, as a result of the exchange of fire, four of the people on board the motorboat were killed and six others were injured.

"Following the clash on the foreign side, four of the attackers were killed and six were injured, who received medical assistance ," the statement said.

In this incident, amid rising tensions between Cuba and the US, the captain of the Cuban coast guard ship was also injured.

The identities of the people on board the ship or what it was doing in the area are unclear, while the Cuban government has launched an investigation into the incident.

The incident comes amid rising tensions between the US and Cuba, which is facing a deepening fuel crisis that has been exacerbated by a US blockade of oil shipments from Venezuela, an early ally in the region, to the island.

The incident also comes as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Saint Kitts and Nevis to meet with Caribbean leaders, amid efforts by the Trump administration to increase pressure on the Cuban government, as well as on other regional issues. /CNA
