Passengers are required to turn off their mobile phones on every flight. But do you know why? And what happens if you forget?

We have long been told that cell phones emit radio waves that can interfere with the normal operation of aircraft equipment and also cause interference with the pilot's headset.

Even though cell phones are well out of range when in mid-flight, they continue to send out electrical signals looking for a connection. Going into airplane mode simply means that all cellular signals are turned off.
