10 billion crabs suddenly disappeared from the Bering Sea / The reason is

When scientists realized that about 10 billion snow crabs had disappeared from the Bering Sea between 2018 and 2021, they weren't sure where they might have gone. However, after searching for a potentially migratory population, they came to a much more unfortunate conclusion.

A new study published by National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) researchers in Science found that billions of snow crabs were not finding a new home.

They were suffering from what was perhaps the greatest mortality collapse known to the species. 

Researchers have been aware of the crab extinction for some time, but the extent of the catastrophe and the exact causes behind it were previously unknown.

"When I first got the 2021 data from the survey, my mind was blown," Cody Szuwalski, the study's lead author and NOAA fisheries biologist, told CNN. 

“Everyone was hoping and praying that this was a survey error and that next year you would see more crabs. And then in 2022, it was more of a resignation that this will be a long road," he said./ CNA
