Tourist areas will be prioritized in terms of energy investments. Minister of Infrastructure and Energy, Enea Karakaçi, during an inspection of the new Golem substation, emphasized the importance of this investment in coping with the growing influx of tourism, as well as the priorities in several other areas.
"As part of the plan of measures that the ministry and the OSSH have for tourist and coastal areas, we are today at the new Golem substation where we have doubled the capacity and provided a final solution to the 50 thousand residents that this substation supplies, including tourist areas, including Mali i Robi, Golem, but also Qerret," said Karakaçi.
He added that the interventions are part of a broader program that extends beyond.
"Meanwhile, OSSH has a plan of measures for 2026 for this area," the minister declared.
Representatives of the OSSH confirmed that investments will focus on strengthening existing infrastructure and expanding it in line with urban and tourist development.
"We have an investment plan since the Golem area is a developing area. We foresee other points that require attention and we are currently in the process of strengthening the substation in Porto Romano, which will go from 50 mega to 100 mega. So, we will add another transformer," said the representative of the OSSH.
According to him, the interventions also include the modernization of the existing network in tourist areas.
"We have an investment in Golem beach as some feeders have remained at 6 kV voltage and will be converted to 20 kV. We will also close some feeders to be converted into loops where, in addition to increasing capacity, we will also have flexibility in security of supply," he added.
The minister stressed that the investments aim not only to increase capacities, but also to reduce losses in the network. “These investments are important not only for reducing losses, but also for security of supply,” said Karakaçi.
The focus of interventions remains in areas that continue to have problems, such as Spilleja, where institutions have completed a first phase of investment.
"Meanwhile, we have had a concern over the years in the Spille area. Last year we started and this year we are closing the first phase of investment there, an important investment as it affects the area where we have had problems. But OSSH plans to implement a second phase. Spille is one of the few tourist areas that still have problems and where we are continuing investments. A 20 kilovolt network will be installed and we have some problems at the end of the line due to the load," the minister said.
The expansion of the coastal energy network comes at a time when Albania is experiencing significant growth in tourism, adding pressure on existing infrastructure and making sustainable energy supply a key priority for the coming seasons. /Monitor
