Silver hit a new high on Monday as traders placed speculative bets on continued supply tightness.
The white metal rose to $58.23 per ounce, after rising nearly 6% on Friday. It has climbed six straight and has nearly doubled in value this year, outpacing gold's rise of about 60%.
A record amount of silver entered London in October to ease a historic squeeze in the world's largest trading center for the metal, but it has put other centers under pressure. Inventories in warehouses linked to the Shanghai Futures Exchange recently hit their lowest level in nearly a decade, and the cost of borrowing the metal for a month remains high.
With gold taking a break, it seems investors have turned their attention to silver.
Economic analysts point out that the situation for the two metals has been driven by growing expectations that the US Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this month. Markets are fully pricing in a quarter-point rate cut due to continued weakness in the US labor market and an increase in dovish comments from Federal Reserve officials over the past week. /CNA
