At historic low/ Unemployment in the eurozone reaches 6.2%

The number of unemployed citizens remains historically low, although the eurozone is bracing for the impact of US tariffs. The eurozone unemployment rate was stable on a monthly basis in March at 6.2%, using a seasonally adjusted figure.

This is a record low and lower than the 6.5% in March 2024.

Meanwhile, in the EU, the unemployment rate was 5.8% in March 2025, also stable on a monthly basis, and lower than 6.0% in March 2024. To look at the basic number of employed people, around 12.9 million people in the EU were unemployed in March 2025, and 10.8 million of them were in the euro area.

Compared to February 2025, unemployment increased by 74,000 in the EU and by 83,000 in the euro area.

Year-on-year, total unemployment in March decreased by 340,000 in the EU and by 288,000 in the euro area.

In March 2025, the youth unemployment rate was 14.5% in the EU, down from 14.6% in the previous month. This total includes citizens under 25 years of age.

In the eurozone, the youth unemployment rate was 14.2% in March, down from 14.3% the previous month.

The region's economy grew more than expected at the start of the year, data confirmed earlier this week.

However, economists predict that tariffs on EU goods going to the US, along with possible retaliatory tariffs, could hinder further expansion this year. /CNA
