August 21, 1911/ The famous Mona Lisa painting is stolen

At seven o'clock in the morning on August 21, 1911, the day the Louvre was closed, Vincenzo Peruggia stole the Mona Lisa: but what would have been the fate of the painting without the daring theft? The painting would probably not have become as famous and controversial as it is today.

Although the painting was praised by experts for its extraordinary technique of execution, Mona Lisa's fame was limited to a few literary and artistic circles, while the general public seemed to have little or no interest in the woman's face.

However, everything changed on August 21, 1911, when an Italian worker at the Louvre, Vincenzo Peruggia, carried out the daring theft of Leonardo's masterpiece, with the intention of returning it to Italy.

After Peruggia was arrested, the Italian government agreed to a period of exhibition of the painting in Italy before its eventual return.

The Mona Lisa painting arrived in Paris on January 4, 1914 with great fanfare, where the President of the French Republic and the entire government were waiting for the painting.

The survival of a masterpiece. Mona Lisa was therefore placed in the center of media attention and within a few years achieved world fame.

But if the painting had not been taken by Leonardo in France, the theft episode would of course never have happened, and therefore Mona Lisa's face would not be the most famous in the history of art./ Adapted by CNA
