The next hearing at the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime against Erion Veliaj is scheduled for tomorrow.

The question that arises after the one-year delays in the trial of the mayor of Tirana is, who will get sick tomorrow? The hearing will be postponed and this is a fact that we already see every time Veliaj has to face evidence and witnesses in the GJKKO.

The delaying of legal proceedings against him has become a deliberate strategy and this is clear, the means are various, from illnesses, accidents, files, a glass cage, etc. all have one goal: avoiding justice and delaying the process.

On July 3, 2026, the hearing in the Administrative Court for Veliaj's lawsuit against prosecutor Ols Dado was postponed after lawyer Plarent Ndreca was absent, claiming that his son was ill. This situation follows a series of delays in the GJKKO, where Ndreca has used as justifications the accidents of colleagues or his own personal illnesses. Veliaj's defense strategy has been diverse and systematic with schemes and scenarios that do not stop, but in fact they show that the delay of the process is a strategy perhaps and fear since Veliaj and the lawyers know well what evidence they have in the file.

Initially, lawyers Artan Gjermëni and Ermir Beta were excluded on December 12, 2025. The defense then requested additional time to familiarize themselves with documents they had since July, causing postponements on October 28, November 12 and 17, as well as December 2 and 5, 2025. Also, the hearings of September 29, October 10, and October 21, 2025 were postponed for reasons ranging from lack of notice of the defendants to boycotts by lawyers.

After the trial on the merits began, the January 5, 2026 hearing was postponed on the pretext of late delivery of documents, while the January 19 hearing was postponed after Veliaj requested contact with the court-appointed lawyer, Valentina Teodorescu . Furthermore, unfounded claims were made about the lack of accompaniment by the Prisons Directorate or the conditions of his stay in the “glass cage”, which were rejected by the institutions.

These sessions are endlessly postponed and postponed and are nothing more than a huge financial cost. Erion Veliaj, in addition to the huge bills and corruption charges, also has these other bills, judges, prosecutors, lawyers that need to be paid.

The latter were paid by brother Arbri, along with hundreds of thousands of dollars in lobbying in the US, with the deception that prosecutor Ols Dado is a DP activist or has requested additional permission and was not granted it (this document was never issued).

A large part of these trials are paid for by Albanian taxes, there are dozens of sessions that are postponed and trials that last endlessly, in fact, Albanians should not have to bear these costs.

It has been a year since the file was submitted by SPAK to the GJKKO, and in the meantime Veliaj continues his schemes: remove a lawyer, appoint a lawyer, lawyers who get sick, and many other pretexts just to prevent the judicial process from developing normally.

Veliaj demonstrates double standards by avoiding criminal hearings, while regularly appearing in the Administrative Court. Everything suggests that the strategy remains clear, Veliaj seeks to avoid the holding of hearings in the GJKKO through these continuous pretexts, so the question that naturally arises is who will get sick on Tuesday at the next session in the GJKKO?/ CNA
