Germany is one of the most attractive countries for both students and job seekers. This is due to its exceptional quality of life, affordable education, highly ranked universities, and many other opportunities.
It has recently reached a new milestone, surpassing the number of 400,000 international students last year. Many of these students plan to stay and work in the country after graduation, supported by an 18-month residence permit that allows graduates to stay in Germany while looking for a job related to their studies.
To understand where future opportunities lie, Studying-in-Germany.org analyzed expert-level skills shortages in Germany and identified 10 fields of study most closely associated with strong employment prospects over the next decade.
Main findings:
· The largest skills shortages in Germany are concentrated in just 10 fields of study, mainly in healthcare, IT and computer science, engineering and regulated professions.
· These degrees are directly linked to expert-level jobs that employers are already struggling to fill, with low unemployment and long vacancy periods indicating sustained demand through the 2030s.
· Many degrees linked to job shortages require lengthy training experiences, particularly in medicine, law and veterinary medicine, meaning students will need to start studying well before entering the workforce.
· Among students currently in training for fields with student shortages, international enrollment is higher in IT and engineering than in medicine, nursing, and law.
· For students who want to study and work in Germany, these degrees match fields where long-term job demand is already clear.
Here are the 10 main degrees that students should aim for if they want to be competitive in the German job market in the next decade:
