Thousands of believers have gathered on the "Martyrs of the Nation" Boulevard to pray on the day of Eid al-Adha.
The holiday of Eid al-Adha is one of the two most important days in the Muslim calendar, along with Eid al-Fitr. According to Islamic tradition, it honors Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son, Ismail, as an act of submission to God's command, before God intervened, through his angel Gabriel, and informed Ibrahim that his sacrifice had been accepted.
In the Hijri (Islamic) calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhul-Hijjah and lasts for four days. In the Gregorian calendar, the date varies from year to year, moving approximately 11 days earlier each year.
