US supports SPAK/ Wendt: Effective in the fight against corruption

Eric Wendt, the nominee of US President Donald Trump, is testifying before the US Senate. During his answers to questions from the Senate, Wendt praised the work of the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime.

He specifically stated that SPAK is a very valuable and independent institution. He also emphasized that it is an effective structure in the fight against corruption.

"From everything I've read, SPAK in Albania is a very valuable and independent institution. The prosecutors who work there are subject to the vetting process. I am not familiar with these investments by President Trump's family. I know my job as an American ambassador is to support American businesses and whether these companies or sectors follow the rules and laws. And that is my duty and as far as the issue of corruption is concerned, I agree that SPAK has been an effective structure. I need to be on the ground to understand well what is happening there. We want every business to have equal opportunities for business in the Balkans ," said Wendt. 

Earlier during the report, Wendt stated that if he is elected US ambassador to Tirana, one of his main lines will be support for justice institutions in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

This is a clear response to the media of the arrested mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, who support him and make propaganda and attacks on justice. Clearly, the US policy is the fight against corruption and the official with 9 corruption charges is the mayor, Erion Veliaj. /CNA
