Copper mine in Spaç blocked/ 70 employees in protest, we want higher

Around 70 miners at the Spaç copper mine in Mirdita have stopped work and blocked the main entrance to the facility, in protest against difficult working conditions and low wages.

" It is a workers' right, the miner is the basis of every employer. We want to take what is due and not kneel before an owner," said a miner.

 

" I am the oldest employee here. They have disappointed us with salaries and everything, we are seeking justice within the law. I work underground and my salary is 3 thousand new lek per day, the conditions are difficult, " said another miner.

The miners said they feel in danger every time they go underground and have no guarantee that they will ever come out again.

 

" We cross ourselves every time we go underground, there is so much uncertainty. I don't know if we will come out. They are making us take our clothes and leave our country," said the miner.

 

They declared that they are demanding their rights and will not stop the protest without securing their rights.

 

" I am one of the miners of Spaç. We are not looking for luxury, only our rights. Without sitting down for talks, we will not stop the protest because we are on our land, our lives have been spared by God, not the owner. We will stay until we go on a hunger strike ," said a miner.

 

 

According to the workers themselves, their demands include improving safety conditions in the mine and increasing monthly salaries.

The workers have not allowed company representatives to enter the mine premises. This is the second time that the workers have demanded improved working conditions and a salary review.

The latter have been promised several times that they will increase by the company, but so far nothing concrete./ CNA
