The European Union's external borders recorded more than 120,000 cases of pushbacks by national authorities against irregular migrants in 2024, according to a new report by a group of nine human rights organizations.
The report, published on Monday morning, highlights the extent of pushbacks in Europe, the illegal practice of expelling migrants to prevent access to the asylum procedure, a right sanctioned in both EU and international law.
Collecting data from government services, NGOs and research groups, the report concluded that "at least" 120,457 returns had occurred last year, meaning migrants left the national territory without being able to submit their application for international protection and without having an individual assessment.
The removal was "often" carried out violently, the report says, with asylum seekers beaten by border guards, abandoned at sea or left to die of cold in the forest. /CNA
