World Cup/ Qatari official makes a strong statement: About 500 migrant workers

Construction work on World Cup projects caused the deaths of up to 500 workers. This was confirmed by a senior Qatari official. The figure is at least ten times higher than previously acknowledged and will raise concerns about the rights and safety of migrant workers.

Hassan al-Thawadi, secretary general of Qatar's Supreme Committee for Handover and Legacy, made the announcement during an interview with talkSPORT, which has broadcast rights to the tournament.

Many of the migrant workers in Qatar come from South Asia, particularly India, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Activists and journalists have reported that 6,500 or 10,000 migrants have died, while Qatar has claimed that only three people have died in connection with the stadium construction work.

Qatar has insisted it is improving the rights of migrant workers, including introducing a monthly minimum wage of 1,000 rials (£229) and a requirement for employers to provide accommodation and a food allowance in addition to improving safety at work./The Times
