Mexico started the World Cup with a victory, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the tournament.

The first goal of the World Cup was scored by Quinones in the 9th minute, after a mistake by the African defense. The Mexicans created several more chances in the first half, with Williams and the post denying the second goal.

In the 49th minute, South Africa was reduced to 10 men after Sithole's red card. Mexico's advantage was doubled in the 67th minute when Raul Jimenez headed home a cross from the right wing.
